Quito is the capital of Ecuador. In 1534 it was named by Spanish conquistadors after a local Indian tribe. The entire region was actually called Quito until 1830 when Ecuador was formed.("Quito") It’s located in the Guayllabamba river basin which is on the eastern slopes of an active strato-volcano called Pichincha, in the Andes Mountains. The population of Quito is 1,397,698.("Quito") It’s the second most populated city in Ecuador. Quito was also designated in 2008 as the headquarters of the Union of South American Nations.(Greening, Robert). It is also the highest legal capital because of the elevation of the city’s central square, Plaza de La Independencia or Plaza Grande, which is at about 9,350 ft.("Ecuador Wonders").
